Biome

A fast, all-in-one toolchain for web projects — linter, formatter, and more in one tool. Written in Rust, 100x faster than ESLint+Prettier. Drop-in replacement for both. Still maturing but promising. One config file, one tool.

When to use
  • New projects wanting speed and simplicity.
  • When ESLint+Prettier setup is too complex.
  • Large codebases where speed matters.
When not to
  • When you need specific ESLint plugins.
  • When maturity/stability is critical.
  • When ecosystem support matters.

Definition

Biome is a -based toolchain combining linting (-compatible rules) and formatting (-compatible). biome.json for config. Single binary — no npm packages to manage. Fast (Rust). Supports JS, TS, JSX, JSON, , and more.

Why it exists

+ + plugins is a mess of packages and configs. Biome is one tool, one config, 100x faster — the modern toolchain for web projects.

How it works

npm install @biomejs/biome. biome.json configures linter and formatter. biome check / biome format. Migrate from /. Editor extensions for format-on-save.

Scaling limits

Less mature than (fewer rules, plugins). Migration from ESLint needs rule mapping. Smaller ecosystem. Some advanced ESLint features missing.

Cost shape

Free and open source.

Alternatives

  • ESLint + Prettier — More mature, more plugins, slower.
  • deno lint — -specific, built-in.

Failure modes

  • Rule coverage gaps.
  • Migration complexity.
  • Smaller ecosystem.
  • Less mature.
