Bun
A fast JavaScript runtime, bundler, test runner, and package manager — all in one. Bun is a drop-in Node.js replacement that's significantly faster (built on JavaScriptCore, not V8). Can replace Node.js + webpack + jest + npm in one tool. Still maturing but gaining fast.
- New projects wanting speed and simplicity.
- CLI tools and scripts.
- When you want one tool instead of a toolchain.
- Production-critical services (Node.js is more battle-tested).
- When you need every Node API.
- When ecosystem maturity matters.
Definition
Bun is a JavaScript/TypeScript runtime built on JavaScriptCore (Safari's engine), with a built-in bundler, test runner, and package manager. It runs Node.js APIs for compatibility. Startup is faster, package installs are faster (bun install vs npm), and bundling is built-in.
Why it exists
Node.js + webpack + jest + npm is a fragmented toolchain. Bun consolidates it into one fast tool with better startup, faster installs, and built-in TS/JSX support.
How it works
bun run script.ts — runs directly (no build step for TS). bun install — fast package manager. bun test — built-in test runner. bun build — bundler. It's a single binary that replaces the whole Node toolchain. JavaScriptCore compiles fast; V8 (Node) optimizes at runtime.
Scaling limits
JavaScriptCore is optimized for startup, not long-running CPU (V8 is better there). Some Node.js APIs are missing. Smaller ecosystem. Production maturity is still growing.
Cost shape
Free and open source.
Alternatives
- Node.js — Mature, huge ecosystem, slower startup.
- Deno — Secure by default, TS built-in, smaller ecosystem.
Failure modes
- Node API gaps.
- Production maturity concerns.
- Smaller community/plugins.
