Remix
A full-stack React framework focused on web standards — nested routes, loaders/actions for data, progressive enhancement. Remix treats the web platform as the API (forms, fetch, cookies) instead of inventing its own. Made by the React Router team. Now part of React Router v7.

- Full-stack React apps.
- Progressive enhancement focus.
- Teams preferring web standards over framework APIs.
- Static sites (use Astro/Next SSG).
- When you want the biggest ecosystem (Next.js).
Definition
Remix is a React framework with file-based nested routing. Loaders fetch data (server-side), Actions handle mutations (POST). Progressive enhancement: forms work without JS, enhance with JS. Nested routes load data in parallel. React Router v7 is Remix merged into it.
Why it exists
To build full-stack React apps using web standards — forms, URLs, HTTP — instead of framework-specific abstractions, making apps more resilient and simpler.
How it works
Routes are files. Loader functions run server-side to fetch data. Action functions handle form submissions. Nested routes render in <Outlet>. Progressive enhancement: forms submit natively, JS enhances. React Router v7 absorbed Remix.
Scaling limits
Merged into React Router v7 (Remix as a standalone framework is deprecated). Smaller ecosystem than Next.js. SSR-only (no static export by default).
Cost shape
Free and open source (React Router v7).
Alternatives
- Next.js — Bigger ecosystem, more features, less web-standard.
- React Router v7 — Remix's successor, same ideas.
Failure modes
- Loader/action pattern learning curve.
- SSR-only limitations.
- Ecosystem merge confusion.
