Claude Code
Anthropic's CLI tool that lets Claude write, debug, and run code in your terminal. Claude Code reads your codebase, edits files, runs tests, and iterates — an AI pair programmer that works in your environment, not just a chat window.

Definition
Claude Code is a command-line AI coding assistant. It can read/edit files, run shell commands, execute tests, and iterate on code. It understands your project context and works autonomously on tasks. Uses Claude's models with tool access (file ops, bash, web).
Why it exists
Chat-based AI coding (copy-paste) is disconnected from your actual code. Claude Code works in your terminal, reads your project, and makes real changes — a more practical AI pair programmer.
How it works
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code. Run claude in your project. It reads the codebase, understands context. You describe tasks; it edits files, runs commands, tests changes. MCP support for external tools. Review changes before committing.
Scaling limits
Costs money (API usage). Can make wrong changes (review needed). Security: it runs commands — be careful. Context window limits for huge codebases. Not a replacement for understanding code.
Cost shape
Pay per API usage (tokens). Claude Pro/Max plans include some usage. Can get expensive for heavy use.
Alternatives
- Cursor — IDE-based, different workflow.
- GitHub Copilot — Autocomplete-focused, less agentic.
- Aider — Open source, less polished.
- Windsurf — IDE-based, different AI provider.
Failure modes
- Wrong changes (always review).
- API costs.
- Security (arbitrary commands).
- Context limits.
- Over-reliance.
