GitHub Copilot
GitHub's AI pair programmer — autocomplete-style code suggestions as you type. Copilot integrates into VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim. Powered by GPT-4. The first mainstream AI coding tool. Simpler than Cursor/Claude Code — inline suggestions, not full agent.
GitHub + OpenAI · Created Copilot in 2021
- Autocomplete-style AI coding.
- When you want minimal change to your workflow.
- Teams already on GitHub.
- When you want a cheaper AI tool.
- When you need agentic AI (use Cursor/Claude Code).
- Privacy-critical code.
- When free tier isn't enough.
Definition
GitHub Copilot is an AI pair programmer that suggests code completions inline. It reads your code context and suggests the next lines/blocks. Chat for questions. Works in VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim, and more. Powered by OpenAI models (GPT-4o, Claude).
Why it exists
To speed up coding by suggesting completions based on context — reducing boilerplate, suggesting common patterns, and helping with unfamiliar APIs.
How it works
Install the extension in your IDE. As you type, Copilot suggests completions (ghost text). Tab to accept, Esc to dismiss. Copilot Chat for questions. Codebase context improves suggestions. Works offline after auth.
Scaling limits
Subscription cost. Suggestions can be wrong (review needed). Less capable than full agents (no multi-file edits, no tool use). Privacy concerns.
Cost shape
Free tier (limited). Pro $10/month, Pro+ $39/month, Business $19/user/month.
Alternatives
- Cursor — Full AI IDE, more features, more expensive.
- Claude Code — Terminal agent, different workflow.
- Codeium/Windsurf — Free alternatives, different quality.
Failure modes
- Wrong suggestions.
- Subscription cost.
- Privacy concerns.
- Less capable than agents.
